Shirley Newsom Tomkinson, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend died Monday, November 21, 2016 aged 87 years.
Born at Cooper Hospital, Camden, NJ on February 6, 1928, Shirley was the loving daughter of Charles Wesley and Adda James Newsom Jr. of Harvey Avenue, Merchantville. She was especially close to her dear grandmother, Melinda Macpherson Newsom of Merchantville, for whom she named her first born daughter, Lynne.
Shirley Graduated from Merchantville High in 1946 and from Taylor Business School in 1947. She was Secretary to the Chief Chemical Engineer at Sun Oil Company, Philadelphia, PA. Shirley and Philip B. Tomkinson, the boy from across the street, married in 1952 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Merchantville, where she had been baptized as an infant. Shirley and Phil resided in: Colorado, Long Island, NY, Barclay Farm, Cherry Hill, NJ, Westborough, MA; and retired to Leisuretowne, Southampton, NJ. Shirley enjoyed lifelong friendships with Peggy, Mary Lou, Kay, and others.
Survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Philip; and her two fortunate daughters, Lynne Bishop (David) of Bedford, NH, and Gayle Walles (Erik) of Lexington, KY; as well as by four loving grandchildren, Seth & Emily Bishop, Brett & Grant Walles; Shirley's eldest sibling, her sister, Janet Bobo (Mert) of Corpus Christi, TX; seven nieces, and five nephews. She is predeceased by her sister, Gladys Turner; and her brother Charles W. Newsom III.
All are invited to a memorial service in celebration of Shirley's life 11 am, Tuesday, November 29th at the Trinity United Methodist Church, 36 West Maple Ave. & Chapel Ave., Merchantville. Relatives and friends may visit with her family at the church from 10:30 am until time of service. Interment in Arlington Cemetery will be private. Rest in peace dear heart.
