George C. Smith, age 78, formerly of Merchantville passed away peacefully on July 11th, 2019. He was born and raised in Trenton and after graduation he enrolled in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Cape May as a Corpsman, E-5.
After his service, he worked for many years at the 3M Company. After retirement, he attended The Restaurant School and was active in community services including cooking for Manna, neighborhood watch and the Horticultural Society. He helped implement a police substation in his community park in South Philadelphia.
George was a big participant and volunteer with Grace Episcopal Church in Merchantville. He headed up plenty of church dinners, served on the vestry, choir and alter guild. His passions included cooking, his dog Milo, church functions, watching the news, gardening and his Grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters; Amy Smith (Edward Miller), Anne Smith-Rimby (Douglas Rimby), Julie Smith-Herman (Thomas Herman); two Grandchildren, Connor and Rebecca Rimby. He was the son of Thelma and George Smith; and brother to Marge Burchfield (deceased), Mary Taylor, Ginny O’Connell, and Barbara Swenson.
Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated 11 am, Monday, July 22nd at Grace Episcopal Church, 7 East Maple Avenue, Merchantville.
