Helen Virginia Martin (née Hampton) aged 98, died on July 7, 2022. She was the daughter of John C. & Helen (Rothenberger) Hampton. Following graduation from Woodrow Wilson H.S. in 1943, she enlisted and served in the US Navy as Operations Yeoman at the Norfolk Naval Air Station during WWII, rising to the rank of Petty Officer 2nd class. She married her childhood sweetheart in August of 1946 and were married for 64 years. Helen was active in many activities, organizations and groups. She and her husband were excellent swing dancers. She loved golf and gardening. She had been active in the West Jersey Hospital - Hospital Auxiliary, her sons’ school PTA, Boy Scout Troops and Sea Cadets programs. Helen had also been active in the American Legion Post. She was a member and Past Matron of Athene Chapter #201, Order of the Eastern Star of NJ of which she also served as a state officer. Helen was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Merchantville. She was proud that she returned to school and earned her Associate’s Degree from Camden County College.
She was the widow of the late Frederick H. Martin, Esq. and was the mother of three boys. She is survived by two sons - David K. (Patricia) and John D. (Margaret), by nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a myriad of beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her eldest son, Frederick H. Martin, Jr. (Deborah), her brothers John Hampton, Richard Hampton, and her sister Geraldine Hampton Simpson.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, July 16th at Grace Episcopal Church, 7 E. Maple Ave, Merchantville. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Friday, July 15th from 6 to 8 pm at the Gaskill-Brown Funeral Home, 33 W. Maple Ave, Merchantville. Eastern Star Services will be held at 7:30 pm.
