Julie Hegelein (nee Ross) died after a heroic battle with progressive supranuclear palsy on November 30th in her home in Moorestown NJ. She was 74.
Julie is survived by her husband Dave Hegelein of Moorestown; daughter Bridget McGuinn of Swarthmore, PA; step-daughter Lisa Lang of Collingswood; and her grandchildren, Jacob, Ava, Isaac, and Jonas Szepessy; and step-grandchildren, Ethan and Zack Lang. She is preceded in death by her first husband, James McGuinn of Moorestown; her parents Margaret and Burt Ross of Cinnaminson, and her brother Bert Ross of Cherry Hill.
Julie was born on July 18, 1946 in Merchantville, NJ to Margaret and Burt Ross. She graduated from Moorestown Friends school in 1963 and The Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing in 1968. She married James McGuinn, a nurse anesthetist, on February 14, 1969. After moving to Moorestown, Julie began working at the Friends Nursing home, the Greenleaf, in Moorestown. It was there that she discovered her calling as a geriatric nurse. Julie’s patients were as important to her as her family. The couple had their daughter Bridget in 1971. After James’s death in 1992, Julie met Dave Hegelein through their mutual love of hiking and the outdoors. Julie and Dave were married on September 20, 1997.
Julie was an avid traveler and hiker and an accomplished cook. When she wasn’t hiking in a state park, roller blading in Sea Isle City, NJ or cross country skiing in New England, she loved nothing more than to spend her time cooking and entertaining her friends, family, and the friends she turned into family.
