June “Joan” Wackes, former resident of Ivystone (Bentley) assisted living of Pennsauken, NJ, and formerly of Philadelphia, PA, and Bristol Township, PA, born 6/28/1934, died on 9/24/19 at AvistaCare in Cherry Hill, NJ, of end stage lymphoma and breast cancer.
June was the fifth of eleven children born to John G. Volz and Helen Operacz in Philadelphia, PA.
June, or “Joan” as her family knew her, grew up in the Bridesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia, attended Frankford High School, and worked for many years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Bucks County, PA, as well as at the Landmark Rug Company in Bristol, PA.
She enjoyed family, church, and bible study. She became a born again Christian in 1970, and professed her love of the Lord to all who would listen as a member of several congregations in the Frankford section of Northeast Philadelphia.
She is survived by daughter, Beatrice Wackes, of Philadelphia, PA, and son, John Wackes (Denise) of Merchantville, NJ, and her beloved grandchildren, Luke, and Keira. She is also survived by her brother William (Dolores), of Philadelphia, PA, who helped raise her children.
She is also survived by brothers and sisters Pauline (William) Miller of Ridge Manor, FL, Jean (William) Burns of Philadelphia, PA, Rita Veil (Richard) of Farmington, CT, John Volz (Margaret “Cookie”) of Philadelphia, PA, and Sharon Anglim (Michael) of Ridge Manor, FL, as well as more than 30 nieces and nephews, and a multitude of other family members.
She is predeceased by her late husband, August Wackes, Sr, “Gus”, and son, August Wackes, Jr., “Augie,” and by parents, John G. Volz and Helen Volz (Operacz), as well as sisters Helen Volz, Clara Barr (Ray), Dorothy Wackes (Frank) and Marie Matthews (John).
Relatives and friends are invited her visitation Sunday, September 29th from 3 to 4:30 pm at the Gaskill-Brown Funeral Home, 33 West Maple Avenue, Merchantville. Funeral service will follow at 4:30 pm. Entombment will be held privately at North Cedar Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.
